Why Do People Like Skiing?

Skiing if fun because you can be in nature, get fresh air and improve your well being at the same time.

As a beginner I used to wonder why do people like skiing and why is skiing so popular. Like many, I had tried a couple of times and failed miserably.

Skiing seemed hard and something that was very difficult to enjoy. I had tried and tested and knew everything, right?

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Why I Love Skiing?

In this world, there are very few things that are more enjoyable than parallel skiing fast in fresh powder on a sunny winter day.

For me, the mental clarity after skiing for a full day is something that is very hard to otherwise find. I also really enjoy skiing with friends and family as this winter sport brings us together. In essence, it’s such a thrill to be skiing.

Whether that’s at home or travelling to a nice ski resort together, skiing really is the common nominator in this equation and it’s just fun skiing.

Top 5 Reasons To Go Skiing

#1. Adrenaline Rush

There’s no denying, many freeskiers love the adrenaline of danger and going fast. You never know what’s going to get in front of you and this brings an adrenalin rush.

For some, such as Michael Schumacher, this adrenaline seeking behaviour was too much and he ended up crashing badly.

Many skiers are adrenaline junkies who get their hit from skiing dangerously fast and there’s nothing wrong with that. You just need to be aware of the risks and ski where your skiing level and abilities are enough. Also if you have good skiing gear, then you are much less likely to crash.

For many, they also go the fresh powder slopes at off-piste where they are skiing without prepared runs. A backcountry off piste is so much fun when done right.

For others, it’s those triple black diamond slopes where they get their reward. It’s a fun challenge.

#2. Physical Activity

For many, during the winter season skiing is one of their primary ways of getting exercise and physical activity. When it’s cold, it’s much more difficult to go running or bicycling. Hence, skiing is a great way to keep you active during winter times during cold air.

In addition, the air is so much more fresh during winter and the cold weather makes you feel alive.

What I really love about skiing is how versatile it is. On some days, you can ski alone and get a good exercise in. On another day, I love to ski with my best friends and enjoy the social activity.

In addition, it’s just fun to grab my alpine ski touring skis and head to back country with cold snow. There, the opportunities are virtually endless where I could go.

#3. Being Social

What better way to enjoy a winter day than go skiing with your buddies and get a drink or two at the after-ski bar.

It’s also a great way to take a holiday and travel to skiing resorts with your friends and family It brings people together like no-other sport.

If you also take a ski in ski out hotel, it makes skiing much more easier and convenient. You can be social and exercise at the same time, which is quite rare.

What I also love about skiing is how versatile it is for your body. You get a workout that is more like HIIT but goes on for hours. This is good for your lungs and overall well-being.

#4. Enjoy The Scenes and Nature

In this day and age, we are quite literally glued to our phones and laptops (okay me as well know as I am writing this post).

For me, being in nature has been one of the best ways to get a break of this everyday life of having a career and commuting there on a daily basis.

With skiing, you get to enjoy beautiful views whether that’s at Alps or Utah. Many people also travel to Northern Europe, such as Finland to enjoy the Northern Lights while skiing. This isn’t something you see everyday at the office and will stay like that for quite some time. In Finland, you may see even a reindeer.

In addition, many times skiing happens at high altitudes so you get to enjoy a nice view as well.

Skiing also provides a break from the routines of our daily lives and allows our mind to rest. For me, skiing is like meditation as I can only focus on the present moment.

Ps. Many times you can also use the slopes during summer for mountain biking and literally spend the whole summer there as well.

#5. Skiing Communities and Clubs

One of the big reasons for me to start Ski Thrills was to create a community and environment for skiers alike to get together and enjoy the thrills that skiing brings.

Some of the best friends I have gotten have been from ski racing teams and practice groups. The sport brings us together as we all enjoy it.

It’s also a great way to fill your weekends, where you can combine something physical with meeting friends and having a good time. It makes life more enjoyable and gives us something to enjoy.

For myself, I also really enjoy becoming a better skier to constantly adapt and break out of comfort zone.

Should I Try Alpine Skiing?

If you have never tried skiing, then I really encourage you to try it. It may take a bit of time to learn skiing but it really is worth it.

In addition, if you are returning to skiing after a break, check out our tips for that.

You can always rent the full skiing gear for a day or two and try it. Of course, skiing is one of those sports that have a quite high learning curve and the beginning will likely be difficult. At first, your feet will feel the heavy ski boots and the pressure but you will get used to it.

If you just find that you at least some what enjoy it, then I can ensure you that it does get even better over time.

Final Thoughts

Skiing is a great sport for staying active outside during the winter season. Some people even enjoy skiing on sand during summer.

For me, the meditation and the clearness of mind has been the biggest advantage of skiing. Of course, it’s also lovely to have friends who enjoy this as well.

If you have never tried skiing or are afraid of it, then I really encourage you to try. You can always hire a skiing instructor or bring a friend that knows how to ski to teach you.

Although many people enjoy just skiing at their ski holiday, some people also like to visit beautiful places and activities, such as a romantic sleigh ride, thermal pools or warm spa water. Some even like ice skating.

These can be as much fun as skiing itself.
